When we first met you, you had hair (not much, but some)! Donna was three and I five. In freezing cold church halls, you not only taught us martial arts, you supported our Mum and Dad to instil values in us that will last a lifetime. With your humour, patience and passion for martial arts and life, you took us by the hand through every grading, championship and seminar. You gave us confidence, self belief and made us understand the value and importance of hard work and never giving up on ourselves. Thank you John, for always wanting us to be the best versions of ourselves. (We may have let you down on a few occasions, though)
Unlike some, you were never driven by your ego. Your black belt was an extension of you, it never defined you. It was never a business, it was your passion, an opportunity to support people and make connections. Every bit of respect you ever had from anyone was earned and not expected. You could never take a compliment and always pushed others to the front. You were everyone's biggest supporter. You lead your life by example, with humility, integrity and respect. No one deserved that masters belt more than you - you were the embodiment of the seven tenants! A friend was a friend regardless and you accepted us all as we were, training or not.
They say friends are the family we choose for ourselves and there was no greater friend to our family than you.
So, some memories we will cherish:
*Karate Christmas Parties
*Tang Soo Do holidays and your optimism that we would be up in time for morning training session
*Championships (particularly, your illegal back fists)
*Sunday morning trips to Huntingdon (with and without the hangover)
*Push ups
*Meditation and the sneaky punches to the stomach
*Laughter
*Your hugs
"You think you're just a drop in the ocean ... but look at the ripple effect one drop can have."
Thank you Tanith, Candi and Luke for sharing John with us! Sending you so much love xx
